DUBAI — Planners behind the Luxembourg pavilion at the Dubai 2020 World Expo have decided to leave the site “under perpetual construction” to give visitors a more accurate vision of life in the Grand Duchy.
“We originally planned to complete a beautiful, modern three-story edifice in the shape of a Möbius strip, with a light and totally finished interior, but we realized that would give the wrong impression,” said project leader Steve Lambert. “The only thing that links a Möbius strip to Luxembourg is that a Möbius strip is endless, just as the roadworks all around the capital.”
The new design will require no further work and will simply be the unfinished foundation. The only real cost will be to keep a team of construction workers stationed at the pavilion. Their job will be to close off half the pedestrian passages and ensure frequent blockages of foot traffic. One large construction truck will remain, its engine always running, and at least three cranes will be left in place to depict the Luxembourg skyline.
Luxembourg resident Rick Nienertz, who sometimes travels to Dubai for work, says he loves the modified design.
“If I get homesick, I’ll just visit the pavilion, breath in those comforting fumes from heavy machinery, wallow in the frustration of getting inexplicably stuck in traffic at 10 a.m., and I’ll feel at home.”
