A woman who moved to Luxembourg with her husband because he earns ten times more here than in their home county has announced she is shocked that services also cost ten times more.
“I hired a plumber to fix a leak in our kitchen, and he charged 95 euros an hour,” she said. “Absurd. Back home, you can find a plumber who’ll spend a whole day under your sink for a few euros, a cup of tea, and some compliments about his new false teeth.”
“And don’t even get me started on haircuts in Luxembourg,” she continued. “The last time, I paid 110 euros. Robbery. Back home, there’s a guy who goes from door to door and he’ll cut your hair for a penny and a half-eaten sandwich.”
“If the sandwich is good, he’ll throw in some elephant jokes and an epilation, totally gratis,” she added.
The woman says that while she does understand that the cost of services in Luxembourg reflects the cost of living here, she cannot come to terms with paying anything for childcare and cleaning.
“In my country, when you’ve got a bit of money, people babysit your children, clean your house, and wash your car for free with the hope that your good fortune will be transferred to them,” she said. “Sometimes, they find a coin and it’s like winning the lottery, and you feel satisfied and generous.”
