MERSCH –A grandfather from the center of the county has announced that he is delighted by the nearby installation of a public bookcase because he needs a place to dump his old crap.
The books, all of which are either in German or French and were published in the 1970s or 1980s, range from weird and tacky to dated and useless.
“My kids and grandkids refused to take them, and even the recycling center told me they were too crappy to accept,” said Marcel Reckel, 81. “Finally, I’ll have a place just across the street where I can unload them all.”
Reckel estimates that he needs to get rid of between 450 and 500 books. He admits that he has not felt compelled to open any of them in the last 30 years, but he is hopeful someone will be able to use them.
“Maybe there’s someone who will enjoy reading 40-year-old reviews of hotels in Martinique, none of which are still open,” he said. “Or perhaps someone who doesn’t know about the internet will make use of this children’s encyclopedia from 1983.”
Following the massive book dump, which took over two hours and required 12 different trips, a small crowd of book lovers gathered around to examine the treasure. However, within minutes, their excitement was replaced by disappointment.
“If it weren’t politically incorrect to say so, I’d suggest all these books be burned,” said one 52-year-old bibliophile named Roberta.
