Knock A Shining Dog

Expat angrily recounts to expat group mildly annoying thing that happened to her

June 15, 2021

Expat mildly annoying thingAn expat who suffered from mild frustration at a Luxembourg City store has angrily recounted her experience to her online expat support group.

The non-incident occurred on Monday at an appliance store when an employee claimed that a particular washing machine was no longer in stock even though a model was still on display.

When the expat asked if she could buy the display model at a discounted price, the employee said no – for reasons the expat was unable to understand, mostly because the conversation was bouncing between three broken languages.

“I know it might not seem like a big deal, but I’m going to make it a big deal,” the expat told her friend in a WhatsApp message after leaving the store. “He refused to even call the warehouse to double-check because, and I quote, I’m not ‘important’ enough. At least I think that’s what he said.”

Later, in a 532-word post the expat recounted the non-incident, adding some vivid and juicy but nonetheless imagined details, such as that the salesman sneered at her and mocked her attempts to speak French.

Originally, she added that the salesman appeared to be high on methamphetamine, had zoophilic tattoos on his bicep, and smelled of stale cigarettes and pickled herring, but at the last minute she deleted these fake details.

“The experience was so awful that I was left totally speechless,” she concluded unironically.

Within minutes, dozens of expats joined in a chorus of sympathy, with some praising her courage to publicly share her experience and others calling for a boycott of the retailer – whose name the expat never disclosed due to a vague feeling of guilt.
