To the person on the internet who described Luxembourg as boring: poppycock! Here are six fun places that you should check out.
Cattle Clinic, Koerich
We know how much you love TV medical dramas like “Grey’s Anatomy.” Imagine if you could experience them, live, but with cows instead of human patients, and with a 62-year-old veterinarian named Guy – who has a glass eye and a tendency to curse in German when he can’t find a word in French – instead of a whole team of young attractive doctors? If you’re lucky, you’ll see Dr. Guy remove excess gas from a cow.
Pineapple Wizard, Luxembourg City
Inside of a very large supermarket in the Kirchberg district is a man (or sometimes a woman) and this man (or woman) has a shiny machine that looks straight out of a steam-punk anime sci-fi movie. If you catch him at the right time, he’ll take a pineapple, place it in the machine, and WHACK, peel it and remove the core with one smooth motion. Watch him do it again and again.
Treeland, Rumelange
It’s an outdoor place – with trees! You can walk among them, play with the cone-shaped things that fall from their branches, and if you’re ready for a treat, you can chew on their delicious skin, known to aficionados as “bark.” Just don’t try to climb them; that might prove to be more fun than your joyful little heart can handle.
Luxembourg Potato Museum, various locations
How much do you really know about potatoes? Did you know, for example, that potatoes are sentient and likely descended from dinosaurs? It’s true, and you’ll believe us once you visit the Luxembourg Potato Museum. With locations in Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, and Wasserbillig – and smaller sites in 22 different villages – you can have a great time no matter which part of the country you’re in.
Soup restaurant in the Bock Casemates, Luxembourg City
Something the guide books don’t tell you is that inside of the Bock Casemates, which is already a must-see for moisture enthusiasts and people who like to imagine what it would be like to pour hot oil on invaders, is a soup restaurant. Granted, you need to bring your own soup, no one works there, and there’s nowhere to sit except the wet ground, but you’ll still have fun. Just hope that the guide Kevin isn’t working that day. He’s not happy when people eat soup in the casemates.
Pascal Wittgen’s House, Strassen
While you can’t go inside Pascal’s house as it’s a private residence not open to the public, you can certainly stand in the street and admire its beautiful green facade and enormous windows that allow you to watch Pascal, his second wife Gissella (she’s from Peru), and Pascal’s teenage children have dinner, watch TV, or sing karaoke. Oh, and don’t miss the blue 1981 Lotus Esprit which might catch a glimpse of when Pascal opens his garage to go to work at his law firm in the morning. Just don’t let him see you. He’s kind of grumpy at that time.
