Integrating has never been easier, as least for one expat who only moved here in January but has effortlessly blended into his surroundings thanks to one word.
Seven weeks ago, web developer Sanjay Singh, 29, greeted a neighbor by saying “moien,” to which he got a “moien” in response. By mid-morning, word had got around that there was a new Luxembourger in the area — despite that Singh doesn’t know any other words in the language and moved here from a town more than 6,285 kilometers away.
“I’d read that it was pretty easy moving to Luxembourg, but I never thought it’d be this easy,” said Singh after an afternoon of hanging out with his Luxembourgish neighbors.
Singh says that although he now has upwards of 20 Luxembourgish friends that he sees almost every weekend, still the only word of the local language he knows is moien.
“We don’t really talk much anyway, as we all prefer to do sports, eat, or drink beer, so moien gets me pretty far,” he said.
