Affirming what many people already know, sleep experts say that in order to get a good night of rest, you should spend at least three hours slowly transitioning from your PC or laptop to your tablet device and eventually your phone.
“Some people go directly from watching a TV series on their MacBook to turning off their lights and trying to sleep, and that’s a huge mistake,” says Somna Ambuliste. “Your eyes and brain are like, ‘what happened to that delicious photo-electric stimulation you were generously giving us, mommy?’”
“And then your brain will cry and throw a tantrum until it finally gives up and lets you catch an hour of sleep around five-thirty a.m.”
Ambuliste says that people need to take a more mindful approach to gradually reducing the signals and external stimuli.
“This is meditation in the digital age, a graceful slide from clunkier, more powerful devices to those that are as delicate as sighs, thin as paper, and light as air,” she said.
“By the end of the third hour, your head should be resting sideways on a pillow while you scroll on your phone through the five hundredth reel, your fingers now barely able to twitch, your eyelids heavy and drooping, and saliva dripping down your cheek,” she continued. “At that point, your brain is ready for deep sleep, and you can finally set your phone down.”
