Knock A Shining Dog

Revealed: everyone a little hesitant to criticize government because everyone getting subsidies

In response to the question why there is not more public criticism of the the new Covid-19 law, the government’s hardline stance against protestors, and last weekend’s show of force that involved hundreds or even thousands of cops, many of them imported, and an actual water cannon, it has been revealed that everyone is getting subsidies from the government.

“We were about to publish a piece claiming that it is unethical, according to many international ethics bodies, to compel people to choose between getting vaccinated or losing their jobs, but then we remembered the press subsidy we get, and we were like, no, let’s not risk it,” said one local journalist.

“I had prepared a post for Facebook to remind everyone that the protesters at the Christmas market two weekends ago weren’t violent, at least not for anyone who has lived in pretty much any other country,” said Ima Rosario, an expat mother. “Then I remembered that I get a monthly family allowance, and I decided it’s better just to keep my thoughts to myself.”

Filmmaker August Goodwyn was going to share on Instagram an anti-government meme that humorously compared the black-clad riot police to confused stormtroopers that don’t know which color to wear to a party, but then he realized the foolishness of doing so.

“A lot of my professional work comes in the form of grant money from the state and various commissions, so, you know,” he said.

Later, everyone in Luxembourg – from students and farmers, those in-between jobs and asylum seekers, to civil servants and writers – was asked if they receive some form of support from the state, and everyone answered in the affirmative, adding that it is probably not a good idea to bite the hand that feeds you.
