Saying that extraordinary circumstances call for extraordinary measures, the European agency in charge of regulating punctuation in news headlines has announced it is lifting the ban on exclamation marks!
“We don’t want news agencies to create panic, but we do want them to be able to convey the urgency of today’s news stories!” says a press release issued on Thursday by the Office of Journalistic Punctuation. “For the indefinite future, we’re suspending the 37-year-old ban on exclamation marks in news headlines, and we’re now allowing such punctuation to be generously sprinkled throughout news articles themselves!”
“This is no time for understatement!” it continued. “This is no time to speak in whispers!”
“!!!!!!,” it added.
